Bike to Work Week!

Bike to Work Week!

Next week, leave your car at home to promote the bicycle as an alternative way to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and create healthier lifestyles. Monday, May 16, starts National Bike to Work Week in celebration of National Bike Month.

Here are some steps for a successful week of riding:

  • Backpack or Rack
A backpack is one alternative for carrying your gear to work. A rack and trunk bag or panniers is another option if you want to transfer the load from your back to your bike.
  • Flat Repair Kit
Consider carrying supplies to fix a flat in case the unfortunate occurs; including: spare tube, tire levers and an inflation device.
  • Lock
The best option is to take your bike inside. If you must leave your bike outside, make sure to lock it securely. U-locks are the most secure.
  • Lights
Lights are required if you need to ride in the dark. Also, consider using lights for extra visibility during the day.
  • Route
The best route by car might not be the best route by bike. Google Maps now offers bicycle friendly routes. Plan your route and practice it this weekend.
Not sure your bike will make it safely to work and back? Bring it to Santiago Cycling for a free safety inspection. We’ll do a complete check of your bike and make suggestions for repairs or service. We’ll even teach you the regular maintenance you can perform on your own and how to change a tube out on the road.
